At present, ultra-fine glass fiber separator (AGM) is commonly used in VRLA batteries. The wettability is the main characteristic of the separator capable of adsorbing the maximum amount of electrolyte. The separator must have long-term stable chemical and electrochemical corrosion resistance in the battery, it must not release any substances that increase the gas evolution rate, corrosion or self-discharge, and it must have good tensile strength to ensure that the separator is in the battery will not be punctured by sharp edges or small particles during production assembly. Separator is an important part in battery production. Its advantages and disadvantages directly affect the discharge capacity and service life of the battery. Therefore, attention must be paid to the selection and research of battery separators.
In order to ensure the smooth functioning of the battery separator, there must be certain requirements for the separator itself, but with the different performance of the battery, there are often different emphases.
In general, there are some requirements for the quality of the separator as follows:
The separator material itself is an insulator, but the separator must have a loose porous structure and can absorb a large amount of electrolyte solution;
The chemical stability of the separator is better, and it must be resistant to sulfuric acid corrosion, oxidation and aging;
The clapboard should have greater mechanical strength and elasticity to facilitate installation during production;
The separator should have good wettability, that is, it should be quickly saturated with electrolyte sulfuric acid;
There should be no impurities in the separator that can be leached out of the sulfuric acid solution that are harmful to the battery;
The surface color of the partition should be basically the same, and cracks and perforations are not allowed;
The resistance of the separator immersed in the electrolyte sulfuric acid solution should be small;
The separator should have a wide temperature range;
The separator should have a certain porosity, and the consistency of the pore size should be high;
The soft partition should have the required shrinkage or expansion rate;
It should have good folding resistance for soft partitions;
The dry thickness and uniformity of the separator should meet the index requirements;
