The failure of a vent plug not only creates safety hazards for the battery but also significantly affects its performance and lifespan.


When the vent plug fails, it can cause a large amount of gas to become trapped, leading to battery casing swelling and rupture. Due to manufacturing defects or prolonged use causing valve components to age, a failed safety valve can result in battery leakage. It can also lead to an increase in internal resistance and a decrease in capacity. If the safety valve fails and opens prematurely when the internal pressure of the battery is not high, it will cause the electrolyte to evaporate faster, leading to localized electrolyte loss, increased internal resistance, and reduced capacity of the battery.


When the vent plug fails, it can also cause the battery's voltage to drop and internal resistance to rise. For example, during routine battery maintenance, a battery with a failed safety valve often exhibits significantly lower open-circuit voltage and higher internal resistance, becoming a weak cell within the battery pack. Since battery packs require high consistency among individual cells, the presence of a few weak cells that are not promptly repaired or handled will affect the other cells, causing them to deteriorate quickly as well. This poses a significant threat to the stability of the entire battery pack.


Methods for inspecting vent plug failure:

Regarding the valve in a valve-regulated lead-acid battery, different brands use different types of valves with varying shapes. However, most valve-regulated lead-acid battery valves are mounted on a plastic frame. By applying a certain amount of pressure to one side of the valve, the quality of the valve can be directly tested. It is important to emphasize that many lead-acid battery maintenance personnel believe that valve-regulated lead-acid batteries are maintenance-free, which is a misconception. We should adopt the correct methods for maintenance.
