Comparison of Gel battery and AGM battery - 1

2022-10-05

There are two types of valve-regulated sealed lead-acid batteries (VRLA) today, namely, GLASS FIBER SEPARATORS (AGM) and silicon gel (Gel) are used to "fix" the sulfuric acid electrolyte in two different ways. They both use the principle of cathode absorption to seal the battery, but the channels provided for the oxygen evolved from the anode to reach the cathode are different, so the performance of the two batteries is different.

A brief historical review

The lead-acid battery has been the most widely used chemical power source in the military and civilian fields since its inception to the present. Since it uses sulfuric acid electrolyte, acid will flow out during transportation, and acid mist will be precipitated during charging, which will cause damage to the environment and equipment. People try to "fix" the electrolyte and "seal" the battery. So the lead-acid battery using colloidal electrolyte came into being.

The colloidal electrolyte used in the initial colloidal lead-acid battery is made of water glass, and then directly added to the dry-state lead-acid battery. Although this achieves the purpose of "fixing" the electrolyte or reducing the precipitation of acid mist, the capacity of the battery is about 20% lower than that of the original battery with free electrolyte, so it is not accepted by people.

At the same time as the development of colloidal batteries, the cathode absorption sealed lead-acid battery using GLASS FIBER SEPARATOR  was born. Therefore, in the national economy, especially the occasions where the fixed lead-acid battery was used, it has been rapidly promoted and applied, so people have left the colloidal lead-acid battery behind.

In the 1980s, the gel-sealed lead-acid battery has been used for many years, and the effect shows that its performance is indeed different from the previous gel-lead battery. This makes people have to re-understand the colloidal lead-acid battery.
